A. —ANTIQ. GR. Hymne d'allégresse et de reconnaissance en l'honneur d'Apollon. Dans les banquets des clubs (...) on chantait le paean en l'honneur d'Apollon (TAINE, Philos. art., t.2, 1865, p.173).
— P. ext. Chant collectif entonné pour honorer certaines divinités ou certains héros. La prière est dite à haute voix par le prêtre de Neptune (...); la foule, bordant la mer, unit ses invocations à celle du pilote; le péan est chanté, tandis que la voile se déploie aux rayons et au souffle de l'aurore (CHATEAUBR., Mém., t.2, 1848, p.290).
B. —P. anal. Hymne de louange, chant d'espoir ou de victoire. Plus on relit l'Épître à François et plus on y trouve à admirer. C'est un des grands paeans de la Renaissance française (LARBAUD, Vice impuni, 1941, p.44).
— Chanter, entonner (le) péan. Chanter, crier victoire. Les travailleurs anglais n'étaient pas les derniers à applaudir le triomphe de l'Empire au Jubilé de diamant de la reine Victoria, ni les travailleurs allemands à célébrer la naissance du Reich après 1870, ni les travailleurs américains à entonner le péan dans l'expansion qui précéda les redoutables années 30 (PERROUX, Écon. XXes., 1964, p.340).
